Dungeoneering

April 22nd, 2010

Dungeoneering… wtf?

It appears to me that there are great benefits to this skill when you get high enough to do a scroll, or get an item with tokens, but soloing is only possible if you play very low settings or you are 99 in all your combat skills, and you better hope that you don’t get disconnected, because there is no way of recovering your dungeon progress without a team to rejoin… and that is just lame as hell when you are in a big dungeon. (please note I was too lazy to research and find out if there is a better way / workaround of approaching it)

I got raped like a frail prison inmate when I went up against the ice thing that drops ice stuff from the ceiling, and I consider myself fairly skilled (I think I am a 118 or so combat now).

Now I have looked into dungeoneering a little bit more and here are some tidbits of information for the new dungeoneerer, that may protect you from unwarranted pummeling:

  1. Groups are definitely better if you want difficult settings.
  2. If you solo, don’t just go into a queueing room (like the one between the stairs), instead create a party with your ring with just you. Through this interface you can set the level and difficulty that you want.
  3. Go through every room that you can, and click on doors once (to see what is in the room without going in), and then when you are confident in your wielded weapon and armor, click again to go in.
  4. When you find the bosses room, don’t go in until you have decided the best armor, and maybe even gone through the whole dungeon again, to pick up any remaining resources (fishing spots, rocks to mine, etc.) or drops. You should also look for the boss in online guides if you haven’t played them before for useful weaknesses or powers. Please note that you cannot leave the boss room in the middle of the fight…
  5. If you are blocked by any high level obstacles (rocks requiring 105 mining, etc.), look into the various potions you can make to look for the right stat booster. Rewards can be quite high for getting through these.
  6. Read online guides that have information on the puzzles. Some of them are very, very easy if you understand the concept (ie running around the room flipping levers, arming statues with weapons, etc.), but just winging it can easily get you killed.

With all this in mind, the skill is approachable, but there are a number of things that they should work on to allow easier soloing.

In an FAQ session, the RS mods stated that they wanted to encourage teamwork with this skill. That is all well and good, but I don’t think that soloer (aka people who don’t want to be annoyed by group decisions, like splitting resources, or Obama’s healthcare) shouldn’t be held back by the way the skill is designed.

If nothing else, I hope they make it possible to go back into a partially completed dungeon that you were soloing. This would remedy the biggest problem.

I hope all is well with the readers, and I hope that this has been helpful to those of you getting started in Dungeoneering.

Thanks!

New Banning on Runescape

June 17th, 2009

Well it appears that Runescape is about to unleash another wave of bans.

I don’t like the idea that high level players may only be high level because they wrote a script, so I guess that this ban will be for the best.

They weren’t really playing anyways, so it is not like they will miss the game… I won’t get banned, so that is all that really matters to me =-P

Thanks,
farnelp

Just broke 60 Million GP on Runescape

June 15th, 2009

Just to keep everyone updated, I am now at 62 Million GP. Post if you have any questions about how I am making so much off of merchanting.

Broken 50 M marker

May 7th, 2009

Just to update everyone on my merchanting status. I have just passed the 50M point, with a grand total of 51M in my runescape bank account.

I will try to add update posts when I reach each 10M marker.

Thanks =-)

Addition to player pages

April 24th, 2009

I recently added an off site link to a site called runetracker.org.

This site is a cool tool to track the progress of your friends and your own characters. You can go to any of the character pages here:

http://myrspages.com/sections/cs

and click on the link above their name at the top of the page, or you can just go to:

http://runetracker.org

directly. Check it out =-)

Please note that their site is currently in Beta mode, and you can only find information on players that are in the hiscore table on the Runescape website.

Does merchanting kill joy for playing?

April 22nd, 2009

I have played Runescape for about 3 years now, and I have always been hooked on the game and played religiously several times a week. As of the past 4 months or so, I have been merchanting and only logging in about 10 minutes a day. I have been watching my cash pile grow and I have gone from 10 million gp to around 46 million gp in this time. Recently I had a spare couple of hours to play, and when I logged on I didn’t want to take any of the merchanting money and buy armor or weapons to train. It was as if my money was locked up and couldn’t be used because I didn’t want to dip into the money that has been getting pure returns.

So my question is this, will I ever have enough money to spend wastefully? Will I ever have enough money to take it out and spend it on something besides a easily merchantable item? …my theory is no, why spend it on an item that isn’t going to return profit, even though it returns enjoyment and xp… my outlook on Runescape has been tainted, and the game has less enjoyment than before, even though I am still addicted to making more gp every day.

Though my gp cup runs over now, I feel poorer, and I have become a slave to my desire to make more money and keep reinvesting my profits. Have pity on me… (not really, don’t pity me, I am a riach biach =-P )

Possible Name Change Feature?

April 9th, 2009

I have heard tell of a possible addition to Runescape, where you will be able to change your player name, and I was wondering if there was any additional information out there on this.

Basically, all users will own their current names, but will be able to setup an alias “new” name to go by (and possible switch between them). This would be an awesome update, and would provide a way to take your high level character with a crappy screen name, and update it to something much better and more macho (or less macho depending on your interests). I do not know of the validity of the claims, but would definitely like a feature like this being added to Runescape in the future.

Please post below if you know any resource links.

Quickest way for smithing experience

March 27th, 2009

I was talking to a good friend yesterday about merchanting, and the crazy loon has 600+ Million gp. He was the one that gave me the advice for merchanting cannonballs, but he has many more tricks up his sleeve. I asked him if he would drop money into Smithing to get up to rune platebodies, and he said that regardless of how much money he had, that would still take too long to level up, so I thought that I should write about various ways of leveling smithing and minimizing time invested. Here are some of the most acceptable ideas in my opinion:

Making the highest level platebodies that you can:

  • PROS - Quick experience and you also have less to alch when you are done, selling is also an option on the grand exchange, so one way or another you get some of your money back in the end.
  • CONS - Most of your time is spend running back and forth to the bank (varrock or yanille are best), also selling in G.E. can be next to impossible for any pl8body below Adamant.

Smithing gold bars using Gauntlets from family crest quest:

  • PROS - Good xp with much less running than smithing, port phasym is the best for this. Just smelt all and wait. The edgeville area may also be good, but you have to open a door each trip to and from the bank.
  • CONS - Still relatively slow compared to other power leveling. Not much chance of getting any money back, unless you find a crafter, or sell for major loss in grandexchange.

Smithing Cannonballs:

  • PROS - You can make your money back with this method, and port phasym is the best for this. The edgeville area may also be good, but you have to open a door each run back and forth from the bank as mentioned above.
  • CONS - Slower than above two methods. Not recommended unless you don’t have much cash.

One thing that people need to think about is that smithing can be combined with many other skills such as fletching (arrowheads, darts) and ranging (cannonballs, darts, knives, arrows).

Final thought: If you have lots of money, gold bars using gauntlets is the way to go. Platebodies are quick, but time spent running makes the task tedious, and doesn’t allow you time to read or do other tasks while playing.

Quickest way for Fletching XP

March 19th, 2009

I got my player’s fletching xp to 92 before being burn out, but here is how I got the quickest fletching experience.

  1. First, I bought the highest level of logs that I could fletch longbows in (for me it was already maples when I started training).
  2. I got them in groups of 5k to 10k, and string for each.
  3. At the time it was before the autoing crackdown, so I wrote a script to cut and string for me (although you wouldn’t need it now since you can cut or string ‘all’ anyway)
  4. Gradually buy more logs in groups of 5k to 10k for whatever you can string longbows of.
  5. Remember that you break even or make money for any yew longs or magic longs, so buy knowing that you will not loose money and you will be on your way to a skill cape.
  6. Don’t get burned out like I did, stop if you are getting too board and do something else (but don’t give out too easily or you will never get to 99 either).

You may want to look into arrow, darts, and other ways of leveling your fletching. This was the quickest way for getting fletching XP for me, but there may be quicker ways since Runescape is constantly evolving.

How to make loads of cash and play less than 10 minutes a day.

March 12th, 2009

I have gone from 10 million gp to 30 million in the past 4 months, and I have only been playing for about 10 minutes every day or every other day. What do I do you ask? Well please read on…

  1. I started off by basically selling everything that was worth more than 100k gp. Weapons, armor, ores, etc. Everything was sold to generate merchanting revenue.
  2. Next, I went to the Grand Exchange north west of varrock, and purchased as many Cannonballs as possible (at the time a single cannonball was averaging 185, so I bought around 50k at 181gp each. Please note that there is a 10k limit per 6 hours ( I think ) on cannonballs, meaning that you can buy up to 10k cannonballs in that time period, but then it waits before it will start buying more.
  3. If you don’t have Varrock armor, then skip this step. Wearing varrock armor, I now went to the battlestaff salesperson in varrock, and bought battlestaffs. If you have varrock armor 3, then you can buy up to 64 @ 7k each. Then I banked them as I bought them, and once I bought as many as possible I took them to the grand exchange and sold them for their average price (you should make about 1k per battlestaff extra). If they immediately sold, then I got the cash and put a bid up for more cannonballs at their average price minus 4gp.
  4. I then logged out and waited until the next day.
  5. Next day. I logged back in and collect any cannonballs that had been purchased, and cancelled any bids to collect any unused gp.
  6. Next I put any cannonballs that I purchased up for sale at the average price plus 2 or 3 gp. (Depending on which way the market is going, this may be just a little more than you bought them for, but it could be up to 10 gp more).
  7. Then I took my unused cash and put a bid up for as many as I could buy at the average price minus 4 gp. (saving about 450k for battlestaffs since I could buy 64).
  8. I repeated these steps daily, or every other day, and I now have 30M in my bank account and it is constantly growing. Try this approach or find other items that you feel could be profitable, and let me know how it worked for you.

Please post any suggestions or ideas below.
